A National Plein Air Landscape Painting Competition
The Canadian Landscape Legacy is a national plein air painting competition celebrating the beauty, character, and spirit of the Canadian landscape.
Following the success of the inaugural 2026 competition in Edmonton, we are proud to continue the Canadian Landscape Legacy in 2027.
Artists are invited to step outdoors, observe the landscape directly, and create an original painting inspired by the land around them.
Celebrating Canadian Landscape Art
The Canadian Landscape Legacy brings together emerging and established artists to celebrate Canada’s landscapes through painting.
Our vision is to:
- Celebrate the beauty of Canada’s landscapes
- Support emerging and established artists
- Encourage plein air painting and direct observation
- Connect artists with the community
- Preserve Canada’s landscapes through art
- Create a lasting artistic legacy for future generations
The 2027 Competition

The 2027 competition will include opportunities for artists to participate in a live plein air painting experience and have their work evaluated by a panel of selected judges.

Emerging Artists
The Emerging Artist category is designed to encourage artists who are developing their artistic practice and building their experience in plein air painting.
It is an opportunity to step outside the studio, paint directly from the landscape, and share your artistic vision with a wider audience.
Established Artists
The Established Artist category celebrates artists with developed artistic practices and experience.
Artists are invited to challenge themselves through direct observation and create an original interpretation of the Canadian landscape.
Looking Back at 2026
The first Canadian Landscape Legacy was held in Edmonton in 2026.
The inaugural event brought together emerging and established artists for a live plein air painting competition inspired by Edmonton’s River Valley.
We are grateful to all participating artists, judges, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, and community members who helped make the first Canadian Landscape Legacy a success.

It is about creating a visual record of Canada through the eyes of artists.
Every painting tells a story about a place, a moment, and an artist’s personal connection with the land.
