Submission Guidelines
- Eligibility: Open to Edmonton and area residents aged 18+.
- Media: Oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, or mixed media.
- Size: Minimum 12”x16”, Maximum 36”x48”.
- Deadlines:
- Online Submissions: May 31, 2025
- Physical Artwork Delivery: July 15, 2025
Live Painting Sessions
Artists will have 5 hours to paint live models, with 15-minute breaks scheduled for optimal focus and comfort.
Location: Urban Art Studio 101, Downtown Edmonton
Provided: Professional easels, spacious and well-lit studio, and refreshments during breaks.

Competition Rules, Terms, and Conditions
1. Eligibility
1.1. The Canadian Portrait Artist of the Year – Edmonton Edition 2025 is open to all artists residing in Edmonton and surrounding areas.
1.2. Artists must enter in one of two categories:
- Emerging Artists: For artists early in their careers or with limited professional exposure.
- Established Artists: For artists with significant professional experience, exhibitions, or extensive recognition.
1.3. Participants must be at least 18 years old at the time of entry.
1.4. Each artist may submit one portrait for the competition.
2. Artwork Submission
2.1. The submitted portrait must be an original creation by the artist.
2.2. Media: Accepted media include oil, watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and mixed media.
2.3. Subject Matter: Portraits must depict a human subject and may include self-portraits or portraits of others.
2.4. Size Requirements:
- Minimum: 12” x 16”
- Maximum: 36” x 48”
2.5. Digital Submission: Artists must upload high-resolution images of their work (JPEG or PNG, maximum size 5MB) via the online submission form for initial judging.
2.6. Shortlisted finalists will be required to deliver their physical artwork for the final judging phase.
3. Submission Deadlines
- Online Submission Deadline: May 31, 2025
- Finalist Notification Date: June 15, 2025
- Physical Artwork Delivery Deadline: July 15, 2025
4. Judging Criteria
4.1. Submissions will be evaluated based on the following:
- Technical skill in the chosen medium
- Originality and creativity in portraying the subject
- Emotional impact and viewer connection
- Composition and overall aesthetic quality
4.2. Judging will be conducted by a panel of professional artists, art educators, and gallery owners.
4.3. The judges’ decisions are final, and no correspondence will be entered into regarding the results.
5. Awards and Prizes
5.1. Prizes will be awarded separately for the Emerging Artist and Established Artist categories.
5.2. Winners in each category will receive:
- Official Plaque of Recognition
- Certificate of Excellence
- Art Supply Package (sponsored by local and national art suppliers)
- Exhibition opportunity at Urban Art Studio 101 and partner galleries
- Feature in the Event Catalog
5.3. Winners will be announced during the award ceremony at the end of their respective competition weeks.
6. Copyright and Usage Rights
6.1. All submitted artwork must be original and must not infringe on any third-party intellectual property rights.
6.2. Artists retain full copyright ownership of their work.
6.3. By entering, artists grant Urban Art Studio 101 and its sponsors the non-exclusive right to use images of their submitted artwork for promotional and exhibition purposes related to the event, including online and print materials.
6.4. Artists will be credited wherever their work is displayed or used.
7. Liability and Insurance
7.1. Artists are responsible for insuring their artwork during transit to and from the competition venue.
7.2. Urban Art Studio 101 will take reasonable care in handling artwork but will not be held liable for any damage or loss during transport, storage, or exhibition.
8. Code of Conduct
8.1. Artists are expected to maintain professionalism and respect throughout the competition.
8.2. Any inappropriate behavior, including but not limited to harassment, discrimination, or damage to property, will result in immediate disqualification.
9. Terms and Conditions Agreement
9.1. By entering the competition, participants agree to comply with these rules, terms, and conditions.
9.2. Urban Art Studio 101 reserves the right to amend or modify these rules at any time without prior notice.
9.3. Any disputes related to the competition will be governed by the laws of the Province of Alberta.
